- How do I make a recommendation?
-
See the steps below or visit the Rec Process page for a descriptive graphic.
- Click on 'Make a Rec' in the top navigation bar.
- Type in the name of the specific product that you would like to recommend. Once you find it, click it, and then click the next button (arrow).
- Describe briefly why you like it. You have 140 characters of text for your recommendation. The number above the box tells you how many characters you have left to use.
- Hit the "rec it" button to make the recommendation searchable by others. You may also share the "rec" with friends and followers in social websites or simply e-mail it to them.
- How do I make a great recommendation?
-
Click on 'Make a Rec' in the top navigation bar and choose a product you are passionate about or have experience with or great knowledge of – something that you believe your friends and followers would appreciate hearing about.
Next, and this part is really the key, add your own sincere comments to express what you really love about the product. Tell your friends something about the product that you could have only learned by "living with it" – as you have.
- How do I share the rec with my friends and followers?
-
After you have created the rec, Rec.fm will make it available to people searching for product suggestions. We will also create a small URL and give you the opportunity to share that URL by automatically placing it into your Facebook Update or Twitter Tweet box. You can also send your rec via email and/or other social media sites.
Before doing so please add some more information in your Tweet or Update box about why you are sending the rec (i.e., "I love this cell phone:") and send it on to your friends and followers. Rec.fm will automatically append information to your message explaining to your friends why you are making it like so: "This rec is for the benefit of my friends and the NFCR. Rec.fm - Great recs for great causes"
- What will my friends and followers see when they get my rec?
-
When your friend clicks on the short URL they will be taken to a helpful recommendation viewing page which looks like this: Example.
The rec page will show your friends your comments on the product, your selected charity, comments from other recommenders and various merchants from which to purchase the product if they chose to.
- How do I find a great rec on a product I'm looking for?
-
- Input the name or type of product you're looking for in the Find Recommended Products search bar at the top of the Rec.fm homepage.
- See recs for the products you're looking for.
When a rec is from a Rec.fm user, you'll also see:
- Who is recommending it
- Why they are recommending it
- Their charity
- The recommenders rating
- Links to purchase the product if you'd like to
- When I search on "Find a Rec" how are product recommendation search results prioritized?
-
"Find a Rec" is designed to provide relevant search results ordered by:
- Relevant recommendations from your own social network (when known)
- Recommendations from other Rec.fm users with a high degree of relevancy and high recommendation ratings
- Relevant products which have a high recommendation rating AND a statistically significant number of recommenders. Products are only shown from trusted merchants who openly display recommendation ratings and actual recommendations for every products.
- How do the incentives work? What is a Rec.fm 'hero'?
-
The charitable cause of the recommender will be rewarded with half of all earnings which result from the recommendation. Additionally, "great" recommenders will be recognized on our site.
To prevent spam and clutter, recommendations which are bad or misleading may be deleted.
- How much will my charity really receive for a 'good' or 'great' recommendation by me?
-
Merchants typically pay 4% to 25% of a product's value as a 'referral fee' on purchases which result from your recommendation. Sometime they pay a small amount of revenue if your friends simply look at the product you're recommending. More than half of our earnings will be paid to your charity.
Because your recs will be saved in the Rec.fm directory, which will be indexed by search engines and accessible by millions of individuals, and because recs will be re-broadcast virally to large audiences, the amount of money made by your charity could become very substantial over time.
- What if I change my mind or have a new experience with the product I recommended?
-
No problem – that is to be expected. We encourage you to clarify, add to, or delete your recommendations at any time.
